Mirza Mehmood Beg Library, the College Library of Zakir Husain Delhi College (University of Delhi), New Delhi, is one of the oldest libraries in Delhi University system, which came into existence way back in 1792 with the foundation of the College. It is fully air conditioned with a total collection of around 90,000 documents. It runs on fully open access system. It has two reading halls with seating capacity of 100 each and a well equipped multimedia lab having 78 computers connected to Delhi University through WAN. The Library also houses two teachers’ enclosures having collective seating capacity of 20. It also houses one Enabling Unit for differently abled users of the Library. It also has one room dedicated to the Delhi College Archives wherein very old, rare, and historical documents related to the College history as well as history of Delhi have been kept. The Library also has a good collection of rare books and manuscripts. Besides text books and the books related to the academic requirements, the Library also subscribes leading magazines, leisure books, competitive books, and books related to general awareness. It also houses a Book Bank with a rich collection of around 12000 books. It renders services to the students of the College by providing them books for the whole academic session. The College Library is administered by a Library Committee headed by the Principal and the Librarian holds the position of Member Secretary while the teachers-in-charge of all the Departments of the College are the members of the Library Committee. The Staff Council of the College elects a Convener of the Library Committee having tenure of one year, which may be extended for further one year if the Staff Council desires so, while the tenure of the teachers-in-charge is one year. Being a statuary body of the library, it gives its recommendations for the betterment of the Library and its services from time to time. The College Library acquires books and reading resources on the recommendations of the Teachers-in-Charge of the various departments of the College. Generally, a representative of the publishers/suppliers contacts the Teachers-in-Charge and gets their recommendations for specific titles on a prescribed Recommendation Form provided by the library. The faculty also gets books from various book exhibitions including biennial “Bhisham Sahani Book Fair” organized by the Book Exhibition Committee in association with the College Library. The subscription of magazines and periodicals (newspapers) are decided annually in the meeting of the Library Committee.
